Not to mention freedom of speech, association, and assembly. I value those rights for myself and would not deny them to others, no matter how offensive I find their beliefs.
Thats mighty kind of you...most people want to keep those rights for themselves, fuck all to everyone else.

speech-blasphemy, association-idols, assembly-worship of false gods.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

I'm old enough to remember the desegregation of schools and "separate but equal". I'm uncomfortable with the government at any level violating anyone's rights.

I think I see where you're going with this. The bill of rights prohibits government intrusion, not private entities.
Religion is a voluntary association. Adults can make their own decisions in the matter. Yes, there's the issue of children and indoctrination. I'm not sure where the line is drawn. Is indoctrination abusive? I know some would make that argument. I've got some discomfort with intrusion into parental rights to raise their children according to their own value system. Again, I'm not sure where the line is drawn, but it's there.

Our government does protect us as individuals from the intrusion of these things, even by private organizations. What we have here is an organization of people who are directly or indirectly taking action with or without the consent of any given citizen in a manner which we have already ruled against completely (in every other area of life...go figure, can't touch religion). Normally people sign wavers (with full disclosure) before they're experimented on. That's my two cents.

I saw one of those church marquees on the way home today.
Quote:Give to god what is right - not what is left.
You make people miserable and there's nothing they can do about it, just like god.
-- Homer Simpson
God has no place within these walls, just as facts have no place within organized religion.
-- Superintendent Chalmers
Science is like a blabbermouth who ruins a movie by telling you how it ends. There are some things we don't want to know. Important things.
-- Ned Flanders
Once something's been approved by the government, it's no longer immoral.

Let's treat religion the same way we treat driving: You have to be fifteen to start, and it is entirely voluntary. Wouldn't stop the snake junkies and voodoo wankers, but at least, if it were discovered as the result of other investigations (child abuse, neglect or endangerment come to mind), it could be used as an aggravating factor in prosecution. Children are kept "safe" from sex, but exposed to this lunacy. Fucking ridiculous.
