Well, I've climbed Croagh Patrick (kept me boots on, though).
Boru People used to do that on their knees, and still do it barefoot to this day.
Scary example of religious drivers. Not dissimilar to the crucifictions re-enacted in the Philippines.
The notion that suffering is a good thing is an entirely religious notion. And an immoral notion at that.

I have seen pilgrimages to Fatima here. Yep, people that could know better. But then I accept S&M, so I can't say anything against those that self inflict wounds for a prayer.

Sure. If S&M is what bakes one's noodle, I am OK so long as it is between consenting adults and no harm is done.
But there are not many S&M folks claiming that it is the only way to be saved and you all must do as I do, are there?

When I am deer hunting - I sometimes amuse myself by praying to Diana....
Hey - a hot woman who is handy with a weapon - what's not to love?
Plus I've gotten at least 2 deer every year the last 18 years - and 5 a year several times.....
That's better results than that Jewish carpenter can deliver...

A "holy" place is no different from any other kind of place, in reality. The only difference is what value people place on a location, thought, value, or idea. My issue with this is that we can convince ourselves that a religion, or certain set of ideas, is above criticism because people find it to be very important to them... and the issue with that is certain ideologies cause a lot of harm in our society. A harmful ideology combined with the concept that said ideology is above criticism creates a recipe for disaster, obviously. That is why some of us rail against religion so hard, because it is legitimately harmful to a lot of people in our world, so why shouldn't we be able to criticize it?
When the religious respond with, "Most people in X, Y, or Z religion are moderate believers who mind their own business," okay, great. That's not the type of religion that any of us are criticizing.
If you're frightened of dying, and you're holding on, you'll see devils tearing your life away. But if you've made your peace, then the devils are really angels, freeing you from the Earth.
