Because they didn't know about it. Had they, as south american societies did, their godman may have turned something into it. In fact it would have been surprising if we didn't find stories about local intoxicants in myths.

I ask this question because there are some Christian  sects that do not allow their members  to drink wine - or any alcohol.

Grape juice is for children, its to make communion children friendly. I suppose Jesus drunk inbetween the two. Its hard to say, i think he drunk grape juice that was lightly alcoholic. You have to remember that the disciples must have been very young when Jesus called them to preach.

It's not hard to say, at all. A person who lived in that place at that time would have drunk alcoholic grape juice. Wine.

It was likely to be stronger than the lightly alcoholic stuff we drink here in the states (our in the modern world, broadly). Greek and roman wines both had a higher abv than our contemporary offerings.

In fact, Greek and Roman wines had such a high alcohol content that a person who didn’t dilute his wine with water was viewed as uncultured (the ewers of water made available at mealtimes weren’t for drinking, but for adding to wine).

Yeah, it's things like this that leave me completely stumped. We actually know alot about wine, because alot of we know comes from the vessels used to transport and hold it. It was a massive undertaking. If you were breathing in that place and that time you were drinking wine. Children drank wine.

But right here in the titular story we can notice something.

On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”

4 “Woman,[a] why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”

5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.[]

7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.

We don't know exactly how many people were there - jesus, jesus mom, his disciples - then whatever other assorted guests. But we do know that after they had already consumed whatever amount of wine they had stored up for a wedding, jesus magically procured another 120-180 gallons of it.

I don't think the guy had any specific aversion to wine.

My favorite part...just a bit later, after having this wine brought out , the "master of the banquet" exclaims

Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now

We don't know for sure what he meant by it being the choicest wine, we can assume it tasted good and we could expect that it was getting him good and sloshed as a guy who had already finished off the previous batch and was about to be swimming in the god-breathed one.

at 128oz to a gallon we're looking at 17-13 people per gallon
20/30 gallons to a jar
340/510 - 260/390 people per jar.
6 jars.

That's how much wine was at that party, that jesus made...in the second batch. Enough to intoxicate up to 3000 people. Miraculous indeed.

For what it’s worth, there’s a surprisingly large history of viniculture in Israel, and today, Galilee, the site of the famous water into wine incident, is actually one of the biggest producers in the nation.

That said, given that the site implies (they note that the grapes used there are usually French in origin, and I don’t see much of a Gallic-Hebraic connection back in the days when all of Gaul had recently stopped being divided into three parts) there’s not much continuity between the ancient tradition of 2000 years ago and today (which would make sense when you consider that for a long time, the area was under the control of the notoriously teetotaling Muslims).

If you’re looking for real authenticity, try Amarone. It’s probably the leading candidate endorsed by Biblical scholars.
