That would be a supremely bad move.  Sure, he shouldn't ask the DOJ to "lock him up", but he shouldn't stop prosecutors from pursing things if evidence is presented.

The worst thing about pardoning Trump would be its effect on future presidents.

You are correct! I have held this wrong belief for a long time. Someone said it to me and I didn't fact check it. They made a convincing statement about how presidents will take care of other president because that is what they will want when they leave. I retract my statement and post this:

"Republican president Gerald Ford pardoned, commuted, or rescinded the convictions of 409 people. Among them are: Richard Nixon – granted a full and unconditional pardon in 1974 just before he could be indicted in the Watergate scandal. This was the only time that a U.S. president received a pardon."
