I have to say I've been steaming. I haven't opened this forum for months. I opened it today, found something interesting and made a serious comment. A minute later I get that silly response.

A long time ago this used to be a pretty insightful forum. No wonder everybody's gone.

Never fails, does it? People break the rules, get chided for it, and blame the rules. Never occurs to them that they wouldn't have got that 'silly response' if they'd simply abided by the rules they'd already agreed to.

An afterlife would be terrifying...ly exciting (as long as we're not talking "hell" or "hell-like kind of heaven"). I wouldn't mind thousands or even millions more years to explore the world intellectually. And maybe even eternity ends up not being as horrifying as some of us make it out to be.

Nevertheless, I don't put much stock in the possibility of an afterlife. It's most probably just an idea we like to muse about.

Can you give some examples of such complex ideas of happiness in afterlife in Christianity? This is interesting.

I'm not saying that anyone should believe this. Only that the standard theological view of heaven in Christianity is not simply a pretty picture of an improved earthly life.

The kind of afterlife described by Augustine, Aquinas, Dante, Boehme, and many others, doesn't resemble this at all.

My opinion of the afterlife based on the bible is that God created the universe the way he wanted it to be.  He wanted humankind to willingly choose to be part of that world, so he created the tempter to offer us the option to exist away from him.  Those who choose him return to Eden, which is the way God originally created us.  That's why the bible speaks of a bodily resurrection.  Those who choose not to accept his original design for us go on to live apart from him.

My view is that we are all part of the same existence.  Existence has no beginning or or end.  It just is.  Therefore I have always been and I will always be.  I'm existing in time now in my current situation, but I think that this won't always be the case.  It's not as if we'll be existing for zillions of years and wishing we could end it all, but rather, taken altogether, everything will just be "now".
