Never say never.
But do you really want the country to be split to to different borders? I'd feel like a South Korean if the former guy became president of Texas if it became it's own separate right wing country.
It isn't a matter of "ideology". You are right, things do change over time. But if I had my choice of having a friendly neighbor who isn't a fucking dick, vs having a neighbor who you can get along with, I'd take the latter.
I doubt you'd make this same argument if you were a slave living in the Civil War South. General Lee was not just a traitor on political lines or economic lines, he fought to keep slavery.
Yes we do have divisions, but right now, at this point in history, only one party is fanning the flames of those divisions, and that party hates not only gay marriage, and female body autonomy, and wants its own theocracy, our GOP hates atheists too.
Hitler, Schmitler.

Yes because all he wanted to do was make his country great again.
And General Lee only wanted to preserve his heritage too.

It’s not about Hitler. It’s about you constantly dragging Hitler into conversations that have nothing to do with Hitler.

After everyone is done vilifying "the other side", perhaps it is worth considering something I believe to be true which is this: 50% of the Americans cannot be 100% wrong. This thread certainly helps me learn about alternative opinions that I are generally unfamiliar to me.
IMHO everything is broken...kinda feels like the seventies, again. Meaning, as far as I'm concerned, we survived the 1970's, we can survive the 2020's.

That is like arguing flat earthers have a right to insist everyone be taught the earth is flat.
At this point in history, the left gets facts right thousands of times more than the right does.
The right insists that climate change is a hoax. The right claims the election was stolen. Those two things alone are a threat to facts.
It does make a difference. There was a time in American history where women couldn't vote and blacks had to sit at the back of the bus. Only one party today is attempting to turn back the clock on progress.
I get that Republicans are the nutjobs, but when you say:

How does that support the idea that such divisions will lead to the breakup of the US as compared to the past? I'm assuming that's the point you were trying to make. If not then I don't get your point.

No, this doesn't relate to anything I said. You must have misunderstood.
Why is it so?

The divide is far more severe now than it's been in at least recent history.
