There is a rise in popularity of “de-baptisms” in Italy, a formalization of one’s rejection of the Catholic Church. The Union of Rationalist Atheists and Agnostics estimates that 100,000 Italians have been de-baptized.

I didn't know that. Good to hear. It suggest to me that the number being de-baptised is only a fraction of those disenchanted.

I call myself and ex catholic because I stopped practising in 1968.  I think there are a few more here.  I'm aware the church keeps me on their books. Can't be arsed doing anything about it. One reason is I understand the greed of the church. I discovered that they charged my ex wife $1500 for an annulment of our marriage. By willing to bet there's a hefty fee for de baptism.

Paris archbishop Michel Aupetit offers to resign after he mistakenly sent an email for his mistress to his secretary

The archbishop of Paris has offered to step down after admitting to having had an “ambiguous” relationship with a woman in 2012, the archdiocese said.

There was no indication if or when Francis might act on it; he has refused to accept similar offers from other prelates caught up in scandal.

In an article published this week, Le Point said Aupetit had a consensual, intimate relationship with a woman. The report relied on several anonymous sources who said they had seen a 2012 e-mail Aupetit sent by mistake to his secretary.

 Fascinating topic. Especially when one realises clergy were not requited to be celibate for over 1000 years. It became mandatory in 1123. 

Before the Protestant reformation the the 16th century, the term "The Church"  meant only the catholic church, either Roman or Eastern rites.

Interesting to note that Eastern rites priests are allowed to get married and often do. As far as I'm aware, all protestant clergy are allowed to marry. That includes the High Church Of England. (Catholic lite)  Rabbis are allowed to marry, so are Muslim clerics***

Didn't stop  a lot of those arseholes from abusing children.   I'm beginning to suspect that vows of celibacy may be indicators, but not necessarily causally linked to chid abuse. 

***As far as I'm aware, Imans, Mullas and Ayatollas gain their position by consensus, so are not clerics within our meaning of the word. IE they are not ordained

Switzerland to follow France and investigate sexual abuse in Catholic Church

Following in the footsteps of France the Catholic Church in Switzerland recently instructed two historians to investigate sexual abuse within the organisation.

The researchers running the investigation are from the University of Zurich. They now have the task of collecting testimony from victims which will form the basis of a report on sexual abuse within the Swiss Catholic Church.

The organisations requesting the investigation include the Swiss Bishops’ Conference, KOVOS and RKZ, three Catholic associations in Switzerland. The written agreement to proceed with the investigation was signed in November 2021. The project, which is a pilot, has been designed to ensure the investigations are independent.

Innumerable people have endured deep suffering linked to sexual abuse in the Roman Catholic Church, underlined a press release by the organisation.

Catholic priests performed a 'difficult exorcism' lasting 9 hours after a young woman suddenly began convulsing and blaspheming during confession

Priests in a church in northeast Italy performed a 9-hour exorcism on a 26-year-old woman. 

When she arrived at the confessional booth, she started screaming and convulsing. 

After the rite, she fell into a deep sleep, which the priests said was a sign of success. 

"The young woman had already been seen by an exorcist in Verona, but on Sunday, her parents brought her here, probably to have another go at curing an evil she had suffered for some time," Father Carlo Maria Rossato told La Republica.

Worshippers and people who worked in the church were escorted out and the church doors barred. Many stopped to pray outside the church during the exorcism, reported Aleteia.  The police and an ambulance arrived at the scene but were not permitted entry.

The bishop of Noto in Sicily stunned schoolchildren last week when he dropped a bombshell during an arts festival -- telling them Father Christmas wasn't real.

"No, Santa Claus does not exist. In fact, I would add that the red of the suit he wears was chosen by Coca Cola exclusively for advertising purposes," Antonio Staglianò told the children, according to Sicilian media.

However, after the bishop's comments went viral, the Diocese of Noto posted an apology on its Facebook page, written by Staglianò's press secretary Father Alessandro Paolini.

"First of all, on behalf of the Bishop, I express regret for this statement that has disappointed the children, and want to clarify that this was not at all Mr. Staglianò's intention," the statement said.

But maybe there is a perfectly decent explanation. Like he was taking her confession when her panties fell down, and him being a gentleman, he picked them up and sniffed them to see if she has covid, and then he took her to another room to help her put them back.
