Thanksgiving isn't a religious holiday. You can be thankful for the great things in your life without being thankful to a god for them.

No place especially, but . . .

From Wikipedia, that font of all human knowledge (citation needed): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thanksgivi..._States%29

As President, on October 3, 1789, George Washington made the following proclamation and created the first Thanksgiving Day designated by the national government of the United States of America:

"Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor, and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness.

"Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be. That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks, for his kind care and protection of the People of this Country previous to their becoming a Nation, for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his providence, which we experienced in the course and conclusion of the late war, for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed, for the peaceable and rational manner, in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted, for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed; and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and in general for all the great and various favors which he hath been pleased to confer upon us.

"And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions, to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually, to render our national government a blessing to all the people, by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed, to protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such as have shown kindness unto us) and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord. To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the encrease of science among them and Us, and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best. Given under my hand at the City of New York the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789."

Not a whole lot of religious symbolism in that. . . .

CRAP!!!

I forgot that yesterday was Thanksgiving.

Perhaps I'm thankful that my family forgot to remind me, as I always viewed Thanksgiving as the one day in the year that the whole family gathered together to sit around a large dinner table just to remember why we all live so far apart.

I may never be in the position to understand certain things, but I am not about to create an anthropomorphic deity out of my short-commings. Thanksgiving in America has ALWAYS been a harvest festival, during which times we feast on fall produce.

Sure, the thanks are usually given to some deity, but not necessary

I am thankful for my health, my beautiful wife who keeps me smiling and laughing, and that I still have a job and a nice home. I have always enjoyed Thanksgiving. When I was growing up, my parents were not religious so it was for me a time to be with family. My wife's family gets pretty serious about giving thanks, and makes quite a production of the prayer said before eating. I used to bow my head as they prayed, now I just stand there and watch them.

Wow, I found this late.

I am thankful for the bounteous feast I made for my family, of which my mother graciously allowed me to wander off with all of the leftovers, which have sustained me so far and allowed me not to have to spend money on food. If I continue to eat the way I normally do, I shouldn't have to buy food until Tuesday of next week. +1

I'm also thankful for my sneaky mother, who slipped a Target gift card into my purse without me knowing. I didn't have to 'buy' toiletries, and I got a new pair of black ballerina flats (favorite all-purpose shoes) that are lined with sheepskin just in time for the winter. Actually, just being allowed to go to Target two nights in a row instead of wal-mart was reason to get on my knees and shout thanks to the heavens.

And I'm thankful for the family sense of humor, which allowed me to make poop jokes after my mother decided suicide was a great table topic.

Every day can be Thanksgiving day (: don't need a designated holiday to be thankful for the beauty around us, do we?

..unless, of course, you're xtian. Then you'd only do so when praying, I guess.
