The Absurd GOP
RE: The Absurd GOP
End of the day for the nutjobs, it's not really motivated by principle. They just overcommitted to a bit and ended up enemies of the people on account of it.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

If the only reason they can't get enough votes because one party has a partisan axe to grind i am 100% against that.  How that is controversial is unknown to me.

Should the Dems have passed a law giving Biden the ability to act unilaterally regarding legislation?

The Emancipation Proclamation didn't end slavery in the US. Kentucky and Delaware still had slaves until the 13th amendment. The EP only dealt with the areas in rebellion. At least try.

The areas in rebellion, which included the places where the vast majority of America's slaves lived. Or does only freeing 89% of the slaves (which amounted to 11% of the entire US population, according to data from the 1860 Census) not count as sweeping action? It wasn't really sweeping enough, but the point is freeing 3.5 million slaves sounds like the sort of sweeping action you treat as unprecedented.

Presidents already have that ability, and, the presidency being an office, it accrues more and more power with time, while being loathe to ever relinquish an inch of what it's already gotten.

Here's a fun little link on the use of EO's.

Seeing as the South was generally treated as a conquered nation, it's different. That was the Reconstruction Era. Southern states, and not even all, didn't even have members in the US congress until the 40th US Congress.

The South was a conquered nation? Not in 1862.

Excuses Excuses ..... Dodgy

It was a significant piece of legislation that was decided by EO. Hair splitting won't make it less so. So I guess the Confederates were right that Lincoln was a tyrant..... Hehe

The south was treated exceptionally well, it's a general misperception, that it was treated as a conquered nation. I think misperception may be at the root of more than just that one little item of trivia. As for lincoln being a tyrant, meh, more that the us decided then and there that it did not acknowledge a great many things held, beforehand, to be foundational to us. No matter how much a given person wanted it. Be that self determination or slavery.
