If we want to discuss the morals of it, what is your solution to the problem of a city that has held out for months/years - costing you that many months of supplies, progress and lives - and now is a risk of rising up against you once you progress?

To be clear, you are defending the solution 'burn them all alive', is that right? Edited to add: No matter if the their support for forces resisting the siege was active or passive?

And I'm curious, what happened to the other survivors of the siege who actively resisted? Did they execute all the city's defenders or did they single out the Jews?

How else do you explain people who say they oppose “indoctrination” in public schools, but want to turn elementary school classrooms into Sunday Schools?

With help from a temporary appointment by Gov. Greg Abbott ®, the state board of education has narrowly approved a controversial new curriculum that targets elementary school students for religious indoctrination. Texas officials may deny that’s what they’re doing, but it’s the reality that Rice University religion scholar David Brockman found when he studied the plan.

For example, the biblical creation story is used in an art lesson for kindergartners, with questions for students not about the art but about the biblical account.

He also found that the teaching plan treats biblical stories about miracles and the Christian belief in Jesus’ resurrection as historical facts. A section on the Roman Empire for older students draws heavily on New Testament accounts of the life of Jesus, something unclear in the letter parents would receive about the curriculum.

The curriculum slants history, highlighting Christian opposition to slavery and segregation while ignoring the ways Christianity was used to justify and defend them.

Religious-right activists have been trying to turn public schools into mission fields for a long time.

In 2000, People For the American Way Foundation published an exposé of inappropriate proselytizing and antisemitic course materials in Bible classes being taught in Florida school districts.

This year, Oklahoma’s State Superintendent of Education Ryan Walters spent tax dollars to put Trump Bibles into public school classrooms and invited discredited Christian nationalist “historian” David Barton to put his notoriously inaccurate stamp on the state’s social studies curriculum.

America is an increasingly diverse nation. And Texas is one of the most religiously diverse states in the country. It is simply wrong, and a violation of core constitutional principles, for a politically empowered majority to use public schools to indoctrinate students into one particular faith.

New move to abolish the bishops’ bench in House of Lords

Douglas Hogg, who sits in the House of Lords as Viscount Hailsham, has this week tabled an amendment to the bill which would remove the 26 seats automatically given to Church of England bishops.

The bill is intended to remove members of the House of Lords who inherit the right to a seat. The National Secular Society argues that automatic places in the House of Lords for bishops are just as unjustifiable as those given by hereditary principle. Last year, the NSS worked with a cross-party group of MPs to support a similar amendment when the bill was in the House of Commons. Labour whipped MPs to vote against the amendment, which was defeated.

"There is no justification at all for giving automatic seats to individuals in the upper house just because they represent a religious group. Doing so is undemocratic, unfair and allows an unacceptable, privileged platform for the Church of England to push for its interests."

Bishop Who Called on Trump to Show Mercy Now Facing Death Threats

Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde says she’s been receiving what seem to be death threats after she called on President Trump to “have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now” during an inaugural prayer service at the National Cathedral.

“I’ve had people wish me dead. I’m not sure they’ve directly threatened to kill me, but they sure seem pleased if I meet my end sooner rather than later,” the Episcopal bishop told MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show on Wednesday.

She explained that her intention was to foster a more respectful conversation, saying, “I was actually trying to encourage a different kind of conversation. You can disagree with me, you can disagree with what I’ve said or done, but could we, as Americans and fellow children of God, speak to one another with respect? I would offer the same to you.”

Despite the backlash over her call for Trump to show mercy to migrants and LGBTQ children, Budde has refused to apologize to Trump or to other Republican critics who felt her comments were inappropriate.

“The so-called Bishop who spoke at the National Prayer Service on Tuesday morning was a Radical Left hard line Trump hater,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Secretive US church coerced women into giving up babies for adoption

The claims follow a BBC investigation last year into allegations of child sexual abuse spanning decades within the church, which is believed to have up to 100,000 members worldwide and is often referred to as The Truth or the Two by Twos. The FBI has since launched an investigation.

Four women - who were all unmarried at the time - have told us they were given no option but to give up their babies. Three of them feared being cast out of the church and sent to hell if they refused.

One says she was pressured into giving her baby to a married couple in the church after she was raped in 1988, age 17.

"My fear of going to hell was so great that it forced me to make up my mind to give up the baby to this couple in the church," she told the BBC.

The adopted children - born all over the US - are referred to within the church as "Baldwin Babies" because the adoptions were overseen by Wally Baldwin, a doctor from the sect who died in 2004.

The church, founded in Ireland by a Scottish evangelist in 1897, is built around ministers - known as workers - spreading New Testament teachings through word-of-mouth.

At 18, Melanie became pregnant after falling "madly in love" with a boy from her school.

Not only were the pair unmarried, but the father was not a member of The Truth and refused to become one. This meant Melanie had committed a "terrible sin" in the eyes of local workers.

The workers and her family decided that she could only continue to attend church meetings if she gave her baby to another family in the sect.

"If I keep this baby, I'm going to go to hell. If I keep the baby, I can't go home," Melanie recalls thinking.

She gave birth in a Catholic hospital in Oklahoma, where she was discreetly put in a room on her own.

She remembers being shouted at by a doctor when she began to cry during labour.
