SYRIA: Turkey-backed jihadists massacre Greek Orthodox Christians and Alawites in latest bout of violence

The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) said on Friday that more than 225 people have been killed since Thursday. However, this is believed to be a gross underreporting, with activists on the ground, such as Coast Youth Forum, believing the death toll could be as high as 1,800, mostly Alawites, but also Christians.

The latest massacres mark a sharp escalation though, with disturbing videos seen by Greek City Times showing the execution of civilians, women, children and the elderly.

One video shows the Turkish-backed jihadists desecrating a Christian icon in Tartous. The militant says, “Our guardian is Allah, and you have no guardian,” accusing Christians of idol worship.

Imam of Jama Masjid justifies violence against Hindus, says procession celebrating India’s victory should not have passed through ‘this’ area

On the intervening night of 9th and 10th of March 2025, Hindus celebrating India’s cricket victory over New Zealand came under attack as they crossed Mhow’s Jama Masjid area. Videos have emerged where Hindus chanting Jai Shri Ram were pelted with stones by a Muslim mob which emerged from the mosque. Further, the Imam of the Jama Masjid has also admitted that the violence was initiated by the Muslims when they tried to lynch Hindus chanting Jai Shri Ram.

It is pertinent to note that during the violence, Muslims also tried to burn a temple down, according to reports and eyewitnesses.

In the video, the Imam questions how this procession, celebrating India’s victory, was allowed to pass through “this” area and who gave the permission for it.

The Imam essentially justified the violence by furthering the usual “Muslim area” trope, insinuating that if a procession passes through Muslim dominated areas, then the “clash” or unrest is justified.

How Muslim mobs selectively targeted Hindus in the garb of protests against Waqf law, attacked temples, homes, shops and businesses

The Muslim-dominated Murshidabad district has witnessed large-scale incidents of violence, vandalism, arson and targeted attacks against the Hindu community on Friday (11th April) in the garb of protests against the newly enacted Waqf Amendment Act.

They disrupted train services and caused public inconvenience, vandalised the office of the Block Development Officer (BDO) with stones and sticks and brought life to a standstill in the district.

In the guise of peaceful protests, Muslims destroyed the sweet shop of a Hindu couple and looted all their belongings.

While breaking down in tears, the owner of the shop said, “I had a sweet shop here.” He then pointed towards his now-destroyed ‘Subha Smriti Hotel.’

“They took away all our belongings. including cash kept inside the shop…There is nothing left. How will we eat now?” the owner’s wife was heard saying.

Muslims also vandalised another establishment named ‘Sri Hari Hindu Hotel & Lodge’. The visuals of the damage were shared by the news agency ANI.

There have also been local reports of attacks on Hindu temples and idol desecration in Murshidabad.

Muslims also targeted homes belonging to Hindu families.

“The protesters didn’t even spare an ambulance that got caught in the violence and set it ablaze. The driver of the ambulance was brutally thrashed before the vehicle was set on fire,” the report further pointed out.

Manju Bhagat, the wife of a Hindu trader Amar Bhagat, told Aaj Tak, “Muslim mobs tried to enter through the front gate. When they failed, they attempted to enter through the back gate.”

“They broke the bike, vandalised our home, and looted everything from chairs, mattresses, TV to expensive household items,” she added.

Reportedly, 10 police personnel were injured in the Murshidabad violence. Several of their vehicles were set ablaze by Muslim mobs. The cops also braved heavy stone pelting.

“Hindus are kafirs who are to blame for evils on Pakistan; Indian Muslims are oppressed; India is to blame for all problems in Pakistan post Partition" – Thought these statements were from the jihadist propaganda to radicalise youths? No, these are from the lessons of hatred imparted in Pakistan’s school textbooks.

Days before the Pahalgam attack, which has led to escalation of tension between India and Pakistan, Pakistan’s Army chief Asim Munir had called Kashmir their jugular vein. Guess what? Their textbooks for young students, too, say the same.

The books also state that India is “an arrogant nation that has disturbed the balance of power in the region". In case of historical figures, they call Aurangzeb “heroic", while Mahatma Gandhi hardly finds a mention in the Independence movement.

According to a 2017 AFP report, a government-approved Class 5 history textbook used in schools in Pakistan’s Balochistan province, textbooks in Pakistan teach students that Hindus were “thugs" who “massacred Muslims, confiscated their property, and forced them to leave India". The books also refer to Hindus as “traitorous" and being responsible for the bloodshed that erupted during Independence 70 years ago when British India was divided into two nations.

The Global Education Monitoring Report 2017-18 of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), too, had expressed concern over school textbooks in many countries, including Pakistan, glorifying war and military heroes rather than teaching peace, non-violence and reconciliation.

Thousands of Islamists rally in Bangladesh against proposed changes to women’s rights

Thousands of supporters of an Islamist group rallied in Bangladesh’s capital on Saturday to denounce proposed recommendations for ensuring equal rights, including ones related to property, for mainly Muslim women.

Leaders of the Hefazat-e-Islam group said the proposed legal reforms are contradictory to the Sharia law. More than 20,000 followers of the group rallied near the Dhaka University, some carrying banners and placards reading “Say no to Western laws on our women, rise up Bangladesh.”

Mamunul Haque, a leader of the group, demanded that the interim government’s reforms commission be abolished and its members punished for the proposed changes. He said they hurt “the sentiments of the majority of the people of this country” by labeling the religious laws of inheritance as the main cause of inequality between men and women.

Ex-Muslims who’ve spoken to me say they are living a secret double life, something that presents huge challenges when it comes to dating and relationships. For some, it has meant delaying big life decisions, such as getting married or starting a family, while others have chosen to keep their families in the dark about their other halves.

The game was up for Anisha when she returned home from work one day last year to find her older brother, emotional and angry, demanding answers. He had discovered a photo album in her room filled with pictures of her and her Punjabi Sikh ex-boyfriend on holiday in Spain, Greece and New York. The argument that followed got heated, Anisha says, and it quickly turned ugly when her family realised she was no longer a Muslim.

None of the ex-Muslims who spoke to me felt they were at risk of violence, but they were acutely aware of the abuse they could face if they spoke publicly, particularly within south Asian communities, where faith is deeply tied to cultural identity. Expressing doubt in religion and romantic relationships is often considered taboo in these communities, meaning that there are no safe places or people to confide in, says Nadiya Hussain, a counsellor and psychotherapist who specialises in supporting people from south Asian backgrounds. “For those who can speak about it, it may be met with a level of denial, rooted in shame,” she adds. “When we live under the narrative that our parents sacrificed a lot to give us the life we have, the guilt around not being who they want us to be in return for this can be all-consuming. It can prevent us from being honest about who we truly are.”

One way closeted ex-Muslims have sought to overcome the issue of disapproving parents is by dating other apostates who are willing to keep up the pretence of being a Muslim. A glance at the exmuslimr4r subreddit reveals dozens of personal ad-style posts reflecting this trend, both in the UK and around the world.

Coming out as non-Muslim is hard enough, but coming out as gay is near-impossible, as one 43-year-old British Bengali activist, who goes by Veiled Rose online, understands. She has concealed her relationship with another woman for more than 20 years, despite the two sharing a flat together in the Midlands. Her partner, an English woman “with pearly skin and a penchant for the simple things in life”, has met Rose’s family on several occasions, but she was only ever introduced as “somebody I share the rent and bills with to make it easier to live”, Rose says. “They can’t even accept that I am not married to a man, let alone understand that I am gay.”

Family alleges Texas mosque refused to perform funeral for gay Muslim man

Yasmin Al-Zibdeh was home with her two sisters and mom, waiting for a phone call from their dad to tell them to come down to the mosque. She thought members of the Islamic Society of Greater Houston were already washing and preparing the body of her younger brother, Khaled, who died two days earlier at 33 years old.

But then her youngest sister, Jawaher, received an unexpected call from a cousin. "I saw the horror in her face," Yasmin recalled. "They don't want to wash his body because he's gay," Jawaher said, her sister remembered.

The women drove to the Hamza Mosque in northwest Houston, where they found family and friends crying as they sat around Khaled's casket and their husbands and uncles arguing with mosque officials inside a backroom office. To escape the tension, Yasmin walked her mom back to the car, where they would watch the grieving crowd begin to pray for her brother in the mosque's parking lot without an Islamic holy representative.

Then Yasmin's husband told her about another problem: They could no longer bury Khaled at the cemetery and would have to find another burial site that day.

ISGH is the largest Muslim organization in Texas, which oversees several funeral homes and about two dozen mosques in the Houston metro.

With limited options, the family said they washed and prepared Khaled's body themselves and held the funeral and prayer services in the mosque's parking lot, per court documents. After they were apparently told they could not bury Khaled in the pre-selected cemetery, they were "forced to find and purchase an alternative burial site under enormous time pressure" in another ISGH-operated burial ground, the Medina Burial Charity Cemetery—which they claimed isn't well kept.

"It's painful to know that your loved one can be treated like nothing," Khaled's sister, Summer Al-Zibdeh, recently told Chron.

Over the years, the nonprofit has become lucrative. It collected about $18.9 million in 2023 and about $13.5 million between January and July 2024, according to its latest annual report. Muslim leaders have said that most of that funding comes in during Ramadan.

The ISGH also facilitates funerals, burials and religious rites. It performed 359 burials in 2023 and another 286 burials through July 2024, per the report. The nonprofit collected about $2.18 million for funeral services in the same time frame.
