Atheist book burning

Book burning is symbolic of the destruction of ideas by force. I understand the sentiment, however this is what they do. We have to be better than those whom we oppose. There are far more effective ways to destroy ideas than through barbarism. Make no mistake, this is barbarism, this is what those in power do, it's meant to inspire fear, to invoke feelings of helplessness, and we are better than this. It's no different than vandalism to churches, we must lower ourselves to the level of these monsters we have been fighting for Millennia.

All jocularity aside, I'm not in favor of burning or otherwise destroying books, ever - except in the case of ones with limited shelf life. Phone books, old tax books, obsolete textbooks - that sort of thing. Keeping copies of some of them around for historical purposes is a good thing. I'll admit to getting rid of an ancient encyclopedia that I would never use again, and I've tossed old technical books that had long outlived their usefulness.
Other than that, once a book is in my hands, I have a hard time parting with it. If I no longer want to keep one, I try to pass them on to someone who can get use from them whenever possible. Burning for political, theological or ideological reasons? Never. I'll joke about it though - really, I'll joke about damn near anything. That's just how I roll. As far as the aforementioned religious texts, if I happened to have a copy lying around, I'd hold on to it as a reminder of our past, and how far we've come in spite of those who cling to such things. These days, if I find myself wanting to find a reference in the bible, etc - pretty much every version is available online. Can't see myself ever owning a print copy ever again, unless for some unknown reason I felt like reading it again (for the lulz) - and I'm pretty sure I could get one gratis from our friendly neighborhood Jehovah's nitwitnesses if I wanted one. I'd never knowingly pay money for anything connected to Scientology (which includes all of L. Ron Hubbard's trashy fiction). Never burn a Bible, that book is famous for turning people that read it into atheists.

Burning any book is an act against all humanity. Writings never go out of style, if nothing else comes from them we can find some history in most books.
God loves those who believe and those who do not and the same goes for me, you have no choice in this matter. That puts the matter of total free will to rest.
Get over it G-C books are soooo environmentally unfriendly. Libraries on the other hand in my 'book' are sacrosanct. Unlike xtians burning the library of Alexandria..... How quickly your religion conveniently forgets ......

I understand that this is probably just a symbolic protest, but as Sleeping Demon pointed out, it's symbolic of destruction of ideas by force. When the Christians or Nazis burned books, it was about removing any ideas they disagreed with and not allowing anyone to have access to them. Burning books, even symbolically, should be offensive to anyone who anyone who values free expression of ideas. How many of these atheists burning books which are sacred to others would be in favor of government censorship? It's that whole idea of "I don't like this so nobody else should ever have access to it either" attitude which I hate among Christians, so to support this would be hypocritical of me.
Since it's just a small group of Atheists burning a small number of books in a barrel, it is just symbolic. But let's not stoop to their level.

I find this pointless,the book itself might be filled with religious mambo-jumbo and filled with sickening concepts,but burning them?
