What made you become an atheist?
|
Always have been. I was lucky in that my folks are both athiest so I was never fed any religious crap as a kid. I was always taught the merits of free thinking!
The truth may be puzzling. It may take some work to grapple with. It may be counterintuitive. It may contradict deeply held prejudices. It may not be consonant with what we desperately want to be true. But our preferences do not determine what's true - Carl Sagan
("Well, I was praying and I suddenly realized I was talking to myself." ~Peter O'Toole)
I started wondering whether God actually existed, so I began reading about evolution, the universe and a whole bunch of other stuff 'cause I didn't know anything about them. I concluded that there is no God.
"There are two things that are infinite: the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former." ~Albert Einstein
A hard life, participation in many churches, logic and reason.
Live every day as if already dead, that way you're not disappointed when you are.
There's no evidence of god or gods.

My conversion story is already on this message board somewhere, and since it's kind of lengthy I'd rather link to it than type it all up again.

Christian apologetics is the art of rolling a dog turd in sugar and selling it as a donut.
Nothing, really. At a certain point I sort of realized I was always an atheist.
"Sisters, you know only the north; I have traveled in the south lands. There are churches there, believe me, that cut their children too, as the people of Bolvangar did--not in the same way, but just as horribly. They cut their sexual organs, yes, both boys and girls; they cut them with knives so that they shan't feel. That is what the Church does, and every church is the same: control, destroy, obliterate every good feeling. So if a war comes, and the Church is on one side of it, we must be on the other, no matter what strange allies we find ourselves bound to."
-Ruta Skadi, The Subtle Knife Quote:What made you become an atheist? The behavior of theists.
Don’t ask.
I've never been anything else, at least as far back as I can remember. My Dad introduced me to backyard astronomy at a very young age and though I've never done any formal study in the subject I picked up a fairly comprehensive working knowledge - more than enough to recognise that when I look at the night sky, I don't see the Heavens; I see the Universe.
It's only since I discovered the internet that my atheism crystallised into something of interest to me.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'
