Respect towards religious people
|
Wow, this poll is so awkwardly done... Too confusing... So I just voted for the most extreme option.
"Sisters, you know only the north; I have traveled in the south lands. There are churches there, believe me, that cut their children too, as the people of Bolvangar did--not in the same way, but just as horribly. They cut their sexual organs, yes, both boys and girls; they cut them with knives so that they shan't feel. That is what the Church does, and every church is the same: control, destroy, obliterate every good feeling. So if a war comes, and the Church is on one side of it, we must be on the other, no matter what strange allies we find ourselves bound to."
-Ruta Skadi, The Subtle Knife
I voted for the last one, but honestly, I have respect when and for whom deserves it.
I don't really respect any religion, but I am very good at either avoiding the topic, or pretending I don't know what's going on. Say, if someone I know tried to discuss religion with me (and this happens more often than I'd like), my reaction would be to respectfully tell them that their religion is really their own business. Being in the dreadful bible belt, it's not uncommon to get asked if I am a Christian by complete strangers. Depending on my mood I might say, that I am an atheist, or that I am a Muslim. I say I am a Muslim if I don't want to be questioned further because Christians are scared of Muslims around here, and that pretty much wraps up the disrespectful, unsolicited, unwelcome inquisition. 42

Respect has to be earned, MysticKnight. It cannot just be given out because we "feel" we're under some obligation to do so.
Mutual respect or tolerance is addressing another issue altogether. I have deep respect for my mother, who is a Christian, not because of her beliefs but for her trials and tribulations. While I appreciate we often quarrel and bicker, she's worked damn bloody hard her whole life, and brought my sisters and I up with relatively no help in the face of adversity and persecution from our fucked up relatives and anti-social neighbours.
I have zero respect for "religious people" (read pontificating, sanctimonious, hypocrites) and all religions....
I have a higher regard for good people who have a "religion" ...such as Welshcake's mum and my old muslim neighbours. "The Universe is run by the complex interweaving of three elements: energy, matter, and enlightened self-interest." G'Kar-B5

My respect is earned.
I do not automatically give respect to any group, position or organisation, and certainly not to a belief system I consider stupid or corrupt. EG Scientology,Mormonism, prosperity theology and young earth creationism.
Agree with padraic... I have a far higher regard for myself and my fellow hominids than to repect a bunch of cross dressing old men who can't get sex

I have a great deal of respect for many religious people, Father Bob Maguire being chief amongst them http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Maguire
But this is because of the things they have done, not what they have believed. ![]() If you're not supposed to ride faster than your guardian angel can fly then mine had better get a bloody SR-71.
The religious give us this image...it is NOT one of our own making
