i see you're the kind of atheist to just disobey just for the sake of disobeying much like a child would disobey their parents. I would like to have an adult discussion so if you cannot contribute to this thread could you please not post. Thank you and god bless.

I'm totally open. BUT! You almost certainly are going to have to provide me with enough evidence to convince me. If you want to convince me that is. You almost certainly would have to provide very substantial scientific evidence indeed. And IF you did that, even then...I'd almost certainly still only be at maximum 99.9999% recurring sure that your God exists. Its IMO unscientific to affirm that you 100% 'know' anything.

Welcome to our board, it's nice to have alternate points of view. My question to you:

What makes your religion right, and the hundreds of contradicting religions wrong?

Hello Mike.

Again, welcome to our little club Smile

Now, to tackle a few of the points that you raise. First of all, I don't think it is really right to say that we have chosen not to believe in the Bible.

In my case I have very little choice as to accept this book as an accurate description of the history of life and an explanation for our very existence I would have to abandon everything I know to be true.

For example, I know that the Universe as we understand it is 13.7 billion years old and started from a single point. The bible would have me believe that everything started a few thousand years ago because God willed it. Not only is there no evidence for this there is also so much evidence to the contrary to accept the latter over the former would, in my opinion, be a nonsense.

Secondly I would have to abandon my understanding and acceptance of evolution and instead believe the biblical account for the history of life on this planet which, again, is simply a quaint little story dreamt up by people many centuries ago who had no understanding about the world around them.

And as for the bible itself as a guide to follow, I cannot help but think of this quote by Richard Dawkins.

The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully

As for my parents. I would describe the as non-religious rather than atheist. The subject was never really raised and so I was allowed to 'explore' all these questions for myself rather than have the Christian view imposed upon me at an early and impressionable age. Many children are not that fortunate I'm afraid.

The final part of your message amuses me the most. In it you imply that we (atheists and non Christians) are going to hell when we die and you are not. Have you read this?

This for me is the worst part of Christianity and the very mechanism that the Catholic church used for so many centuries to control and torment the general population into behaving as they dictated.

So, the more I look into your faith the more distasteful I find it and the more I wish that you could open your eyes to the true beauty of reality rather than burying your mind in child like superstition which itself, dictates that you try to 'infect' as many others as you can with it's vile, immoral and unjust teachings.

The question is.. How can I save you?

P.S. As a Christian, what do you make of ManOfGod (another member here) who actually claims to be the Risen Christ himself?

Consequences? Can you prove this?

I find it arrogant and ignorant to assume you know it all. For all we know, there is no god or aftelife and that by being an atheist is actually safe and ok.

Religion is just to simplistic to me. Something that came right out of a childs fairytale book.

It was the threat of hell that caused me to walk the other way in the first place. Do you think that by threaterning hell you would motivate people in? This only works for a few, many like my self would actually end up walking away because of being threaterned.

But my main reason for standing against it is the lack of evidence. You have no evidence to prove your god's existance.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence - Carl Sagan

Mankind's intelligence walks hand in hand with it's stupidity.

Being an atheist says nothing about your overall intelligence, it just means you don't believe in god. Atheists can be as bright as any scientist and as stupid as any creationist.

You never really know just how stupid someone is, until you've argued with them.

Hello, first of all hell is not a threat, it is a consequence of not worshiping our heavenly father. Also this happens after you have lived not during it. For all you know there is no afterlife? i find this humorous as not one of you have witnessed death and therefore saying that you know having not ever experienced it is just foolish. Thinking being an atheist is "safe" when you are living through sin may seem ok but you will not know how "safe" it is until you enter the afterlife and be judged by god.
