How can you tell when Rush is being humorous, and when he is making a serious point?
The big difference is that the Daily Show can make a joke and everyone will know it's a joke but it will still make a legitimate point. Rush Limbaugh just claims he's an entertainer so he can go back and say "I was just joking!" when he gets busted for saying something wildly offensive or absurdly stupid. If what he tells are jokes, he needs to learn how to do comedy.
Also, Jon Stewart is more than willing to make fun of the left as well; there was quite a bit of that when they covered the Democratic convention. I just think Faux News is their favorite target most of the time because they so often say so many things that are just crazy and out of touch with reality and because their bias and outright lies are so easy to spot.

Like the Daily Show, after you've listened/watched a few times it usually is self-evident. Grandiosity is often a clue. The more grandiose, the less serious. Occasionally it is is not clear, and listeners usually ask, and it gets subsequently clarified. Often an item will reflect a recurring meme within the show, and that is often an indication as well.
If you watch the Daily Show, how do you know when John Stewart is being humorous, or when he's making a point or delivering straight news?

Basically what Tara said. Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, also, need to do more crossover segments on each others' shows, they're fucking brilliant as individuals but paired together they're just...well, they need an public service announcement warning people, because watching them together often results in peoples' sides splitting open stem to stern...or, rather, hem to hilt.

Tara, I think most of Limbaugh's listeners would say the same thing, that Rush can make a joke and everyone will know it's a joke but it will still make a legitimate point.
If you find it to be true for the Daily Show then I think this is due more to whether you tend to agree with the Daily Show's political ideology and less that it's an objective truth. It's clearly a left-leaning show. Yes, they make some token jokes about the left, but they're usually pretty lifeless and it's obvious that their heart's not in it.
Limbaugh has been very effectively demonized by the left, but he is no farther to the right, or no more extreme than Chris Mathews or Rachel Maddow of MSNBC are extreme to the left. And in comparison, he doesn't purport to be delivering an unbiased news commentary show. They do.

Still a big difference. Calling Chelsea Clinton ugly or Sandra Fluke a slut wasn't funny (not to mention, the exact wording of the Sandra Fluke comments showed an absurd lack of understanding of how the birth control pill works).

That happens because all of the good opportunities for comedy are on the Republican side. They just don't have equal material to work with from with the Democrats. Oh, sure, the Democrats will give them plenty of comedic material to work with, but with the insanity that is the GOP is always going to offer the best and greatest jokes.

I just wanted to ask if anyone here thinks the Republicans comparing Faux News to The Daily Show is bizarre? I mean, think about it: a comedy show, on a comedy network, with a comedian as a host and several comedians as 'corespondants' and it's supposedly on the same level as a hard hitting, serious news show and serious opinion shows like The O'Reilly Factor? I dunno about you, but I think the GOP is insulting themselves when they make that comparison.

Limbaugh has been very effectively demonized by the left, but he is no farther to the right, or no more extreme than Chris Mathews or Rachel Maddow of MSNBC are extreme to the left. And in comparison, he doesn't purport to be delivering an unbiased news commentary show. They do. For me, I like John Stewart and I take the Daily Show for what it is, a comedy show. But you do make a legitimate point that masked behind the comedy routine is a leftwing analysis. It's unfortunate that the Daily Show happens to be the only news source for a lot of young voters....and yet is probably far more unbiased than the leftist propaganda that's puked out by Chris Mathews and Rachel Maddow and other leftist MSLSD hacks.
On another point, is the hypocrisy and the double standards of the left. Much was made over Limbaugh's remarks about Sandra Fluke, calling for him to be fired and demanding that his sponsors pull their ads from his show.....but where was the left when leftist Ed Shultz called Laura Ingrham a 'rightwing talk slut'? Why didn't the left demand that Shultz be fired? Why didn't the left organize petition drives and threaten boycotts of Shcultz's sponsors like they did Rush's? (although Shultz got a token two week dismissal from air time.....but nothing in comparison to what happened to Rush). If the left is pronouncing themselves to be the standard bearers of womens causes, then why weren't they equally consistent with their condemnation when Ed Shultz verbally attacked Laura Ingrham?

Someone may be a talk "show whore" meaning they will appear on any talk show.
I am assuming this is the way "talk slut" was meant were as Rush was accusing the nice girl of being a fucking about.
Which means that you are comparing apples to a medium size family vehicle.
