Now atheism in itself might not cause a mental disorder. But it's not too unreasonable to conclude that a more nihilistic vision of the world that comes about when there is no greater purpose, greater source or external anchor (as useful as delusions as they may me, or maybe not even delusions), there can be an aggravating effect to certain social conditions.

That's nihilism for you. Not all atheistic philosophies are inherently nihilistic. Life can have a value of its own, without greater purposes or existential anchors.

Existential crises, where people sometimes feel their lives are meaningless, or seek a reason or purpose in their life that atheism cannot provide, or see no justification for their life without a transcendent source or something- this is certainly not inconceivable for some people.

Existential crisis are triggered by a lack of satisfaction iin one one's life. Which means that they can be solved by actually changing your life for the better (whatever that means for you). Religions can be painkillers, but they don't solve the problems behind the pain.

People with existential crisis should start to have some serious thoughts about what they really want and how they want to get it. A flight in the world of illusions isn't the solution. And not all personality quirks are mental problems, anyway. Some people are less social than others. They still live fulfilling, successful lives.

Perhaps the problem is with the intolerance in the culture itself which makes this problem worse.

I think that this sentence is very likely to be right. Anyway, social groups are built, not simply accepted. I live in America, where many people socialize through religion, but I never had any problems making friends in secular situations.

But as you can see, I don't think atheism creates mental problems. I think it's very possible it might make some worse though.

Religion can easily do the same (and it does so in many occasions). People who have mental problems need to work on them regardless of their religious beliefs.
