Next at ten, newspaper publishes a list of all known homosexuals, dissidents, poor tippers, people who pick their noses when no one is looking, and those who hate kittens. No reason we shouldn't know.

YES IT DOES! You confuse legal with moral. The Newspaper violated the public trust. Would you want your personal information ON ANY ISSUE printed publicly "just because it's legal". You can staple your nuts to the wall too, but it doesn't make it wise.
Having access to public records is fine, "outing" people like Big brother IS NOT. Having access to public records, be it property ownership or taxes, is there for transactions between you and the government, and you and third party that may need that information for a transaction between you and another person. It was not intended to be public for the newspaper to out people.

BECAUSE THE GOVERNMENT CANNOT MAKE ANY PUBLIC DOCUMENT 100% private. IT IS CONDITIONAL AND CASE BY CASE, The public(including the press) can make the request as individuals or as a journalistic entity to gain access to ANY public document.
Like any job you have in life, it comes with responsibility. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. Records have to be available to the public. But the way they did it is what was wrong, not the records being public themselves.

As someone who proudly endeavors to be LIBERAL* in his thinking, I too think what that newspaper did showed reckless disregard for public safety. Not every meth or crack head looking to pick up money for their next fix has the wherewithal to search out information that is in the public domain. What that newspaper did just made it more likely that drug zombies will avoid the armed and target me instead (if I lived in that area).
*I can't truthfully lay claim to being a leftist however. I'd say I'm pretty evenly spaced in the center between anarchists on the left and those who seek to preserve the status quo on the right. The latter are still butt hurt about losing their slaves.

A newspaper published something that is public, WOAH HOW CONTRAVERSIAL! Go live in North Korea or something if you want that kind of restriction, China maybe.
And I'm sorry to point out the obvious to you, but if you have a problem with that then your problem is with your "right wing" government, not the "left wing" newspaper.
