You make a very general statement that is not altogether accurate or fair. In my experience, people know what's right and what's wrong.

Then they didn;t need any commandments.

That is all the Ten Commandments are.

They aren't some magical code that, if people follow them, they will be upright citizens.

Actually, that's exactly what they are, magical codes the prescribe what a magical being desires of you, and what will keep you in his magical graces.

Jesus upheld the "spirit of the law," telling people to love God and love their neighbor. He hit the root of human behavior. If you don't love, you won't do good for long. Goodness has to come from the inside out. That's why "any average Christian" will be able to tell you about a NT verse on love--because love is more important than knowing rules. Rules are mere knowledge. Love is the driving force for good. And the ultimate model for love is Jesus' sacrifice--a righteous, perfect God dying for his destructive, disobedient creation.

He said a few other things as well, but I know we don't like to talk about them when we're drawing a picture of buddy Jesus. All this love shit, sounds like some pansy ass new age pagan bullshit to me. Stick with what your boy is good at, smiting. "Jesus sacrifice" btw (not the words I;d use but np) doesn't even approach the border for a model of love, let alone the ultimate model, in my opinion.

Should we judge all Athiests by Stalin?

Boy oh boy, that old chestnut, do a little digging, you may not like what you find about Stalin after all. He seems to have been very aware and very adept at exploiting whatever it is that compells us to religion....he would have been, of course, being a product of a seminary. If religious fervor and inquisitorial adventures had left a script...it would be entirely accurate to say that Stalin followed them to the letter.

I was making a point about generalised judging a group based on the actions of some; i'm sure you could find another suitable candidate or I suppose I could have found the examples of Good Christians behaving in a much better fashion and suggesting that we judge Christianity on them.

He had a reputation for being callous toward his fellow students, and had been in trouble with the school authorities a few times, but there were no other signs of the direction his career was to take.
