Also the demonization of 'the other' is as old as civilization, probably even older.
The latter, for sure. That, and churches of all stripes have a vested interest in turning nonbelievers into enemies, since we're the only ones the church can't outright control. It's all about control, with religion.

I don't hate atheists, but many religious people are sensitive about their gods, atheism denies god, so they feel offended. Sometimes it's the stereotypical idea about atheists being not respectful & actually insult religious people & mock them.
It's the same thing that makes some atheists hate religious people.

Yeah but why, it's not as though the religious people themselves are gods, so what offense is there to the person in question in simply reminding them that you don't believe in gods?
Now me, personally, I'm a disrespectful mocker of both gods and the people who follow them. But disrespect and mockery isn't the reason that I dislike religion or religious beliefs (or religious people - if/when I dislike them).

Low self esteem & fragile believe. If one person believed that god is the most divine, then nothing would make him angry about a religious topic.
God doesn't need me to give "attitude adjustments" to people who insult him he actually take care of them by himself in a day that everybody knows.
A religious person -especially a muslim- must always transfer the message & then remain silent. Eventually, you are fellow humans, and I have the right to feel for you & put myself in your shoes ; and also take it easy.. it's my duty .
You know, also turning the matter into a challenge. Do you remember when I went loose & insulted everybody in here ? I actually made the topic as a challenge to prove my point, this is another reason which makes things go hot in topics about god.
#note: my topic about Israel is not a religious message, so don't get excited -_-".

Any number of reasons, but the one I think is most prevalent is that as atheists, we are a living embodiment of a completely alien notion of existence. Most of these theistic people live their lives under and around the commonly held belief that a god exists, and so when presented with someone who doesn't believe in any, even a different one, it causes some confusion, which is where a lot of the misapprehensions about us come from. Like us being devil worshipers, for instance, which originally was attributed to any and all non-christians, by christians.
In short, it's because we exist. We lack a belief in something that they're of the opinion makes them special, and us denying that something lessens their opinions of themselves.
If you believe it, question it. If you question it, get an answer. If you have an answer, does that answer satisfy reality? Does it satisfy you? Probably not. For no one else will agree with you, not really.

This isn't a complete thought, but here goes anyway. It's been observed, somewhat provisionally, that the sense of the sacred in western cultures is significantly different from that in certain other cultures. (India comes to mind.) Not only is their sense of the sacred present, where in western cultures it is largely ancillary or absent, it is also affected by different moral sensibilities; in the western, violations of the sacred are commonly viewed as violations of convention, which, morally, are more readily relativized than offenses against the objective moral order. And violation of the sacred in some cultures has a much larger moral dimension than even in religious subpopulations in the west. (It's noted that moral judgements, iirc, tend to excite one of two brain systems; one having to do with visceral revulsion, such as that experienced when encountering something physically revolting, like traumatized flesh, and a more emotive-cognitive based moral sensation. The sense of the sacred in these cultures extends more often into the dimension of revulsion. [As an example, despite westerner's views of ritual cleansing in the Ganges as exposing oneself to all manner of toxic substance, to the devout Hindu it is (or should be) experienced as a restoration of their original sacred state. The moral sense of washing away one's impurities overrides any temporal concerns for bodily contamination.]) (cf. Jonathan Haidt, The Happiness Hypothesis and The Righteous Mind.)
Anyway, as noted, this is a somewhat incomplete thought. Just suggesting that different senses of the sacred, as well as the types of emotions provoked by violation of the sacred, and especially its moral significance to some, may figure prominently in how the religious view atheists and vice versa, along dimensions which may be entirely invisible to the atheist.
Anyway. Just spitballing here. FWIW. Void where prohibited by law.

Are you trolling? Honestly, are you just taking the mickey? If not, that's either a pretty deep-set delusion or a bald-faced lie. There is no disparity whatsoever in the rudeness or respectfullness of atheists and theists on this forum. They're just as bad and just as decent as each other.
As to the actual question itself, I'm of the opinion that they meant it in regards to the world, and in the world theistic minded people are generally a great deal more condescending, a great deal more aggressive, and a great deal more violent. One doesn't see atheists cutting people's heads off, forming death cults, bombing buildings, forming giant rallies funded by international ministries, in the name of atheism.
It just doesn't happen.

So, to be clear, theists tend to believe that we atheists will be sent to some form of hell when we die to be tortured forever, and you are willing to worship the beings that will do that... and yet we are the ones being disrespectful?
