But AFAIK there were no intrusion nor threat of intrusion of Chinese forces into Cambodia, so there was no intervention. There was an actual invasion of China into Vietnam in the same period in response to vietnamese invasion of Cambodia, but we've counted that already.

I know that the Chinese invaded Vietnam after Vietnam invaded Cambodia but in my oppinion the aid given to the Khmer Rouge is a military intervention. Military intervention does not simply mean an invasion or a boming. Giving arms to a side in a war that seeks to achieve goals in line with yours is also a form of military intervention.

If giving material support to one side of an conflict counts as intervention than the US intervened in many more than 36 countries. I calculating the 36 countries and 48 interventions of US by including only direct involvement of armed forces in foreign territory or explicit threat of imminent major armed attack on foreign territory.

So it is. Giving suffisticated weapons and training to a side in a conflict is not doing nothing. Technicaly speaking, there has already been military intervention in Syria. And I dont mean the Iranian revolutionary guard marching through the country nore the Hezbollah militias. But wapons financed by Saudi assholes and comunications equiptment given by the West.

That's probably a fig leaf of a fiction, created to enable Obama to climb down be saying it ain't a failure to not topple Assad, cuz upon closer look Assad ain't that bad.

Uh, no. Of all countries in the world China has the most land neigbhors, 16 in total. Yet it only intervened militarily in 3 of them (5 if you count tibet and Taiwan as separate countries, in which case china had 18 neighbors) a total of 5 time (9 times if you count tibet and Taiwan) between 1950 and 1980.

United States border only 2 countries, yet in the same period, United States intervened militarily in 36 different countries a total of 48 times, amounting to more than 1 different foreign military interventions a year.

I think as far as peace time military intervention in recognized modern foreign nation states go, United States remain the all time champion in both total number of countries intervened in and annual rate of intervention.

This is precisely the kind of bullshit that I'd like to see the US engage in less, not more. That the Russians embarrassed us by achieving a diplomatic solution demonstrates that we're less capable of diplomacy than wielding our military like a bloody fucking meat axe.

Russian foreign policy ever since Putin moved back into the Kremlin was one single ongoing tirade of threatening others.

If anyone lost anything, it is Russia and the fact that it`s cold foreign policy does not work in times of crisis.

But Russia just defused the US military intervention in Syria. Proving itself as a real friend to its allies, which should please its other allies. How is this anything but a "win" for Russia??? I don't follow.

It is a loss domesticaly. Russian state media, Russian political campains and every single action undertaken by representatives of the united Russia party that concerns foreign countries constantly circles arround threats and hate tirades against foreigners. Be it the US, Poland or Nato. To not negotiate with anyone and to not get involved into any talks with any foreign power was more than just a policy in Russia but a question of image.
Trust me on this, hardly a country in the world has become that xenophobic as Russia, partly through Putin and partly through the resurgance of orthodox christian conservatism. To talk with foreigners, especialy westerners and to make them the offer of weakening a ally, will not come down well on the vast majority of the Russian population.
What would have served the Russian goverment best would have been a total Western retreat out of the matter, leaving Assad to do whatever he wants, with what he wants and with whatever help he gets from whom. In short, macho non compromise.

You wouldn't suppose the US has no ability to plant stories, color analysis and shade speculations for consumption by the presses of its allies, would you?

RE: Exposed: The Obama Invasion of Syria
But it is evident that the choices were A: the US was going to bomb Syria or ... Well there really wasn't a plan B. Russia came up with a plan B, indebting Assad's regime further to Russia. I understand the deep mistrust of the West in Russia, but this was a Russian plan to get the US to back off. I'd still count that as a win for Putin. Add to it the safety they've provided for Manning (which is a huge middle finger to the US, one I 100% agree with, no matter the "disgrace" it brings my country), and I'd say Russia is winning the world wide beauty/diplomacy contest this year. Putin is still satisfying the desires of the uber-religious, through the hard line stance against gays. All of this seems like points for Putin... And that should be the name of a game show.

What would serve Russian government best is for advanced aliens to land in red square and give Russia exclusive access to 92nd century technology.

But not having the luck of meeting such aliens, russia and Putin did very well under the circumstances to aggrandize Russia and expand Russian influence against an infinitely wealthier west.

It is folly to think dictators and tyrants must be self-serving and interested solely in protecting their personal power and wealth. In fact Putin has exhibited a remarkably cool, agile and purposeful focus on reasserting Russia's dominant role in the traditional Russian sphere of influence.
