Some churches are really pretty.

Why bother going to a place, where I do not worship their god! They take money, which barely helps the poor. Religion is a business, and their profits are large.
I live around a few mega-churches. The pastor rides a brand new Maserati to include his daughter. He wares expensive suits, and always dines at the expensive venues. I do not support that! Why not feed the poor? If I want to help the community, I wold rather go to a soup kitchen to help feed the poor, or habitat for humanity to help build a new home for a disadvantage family. I do not need to be entertain by a man rampaging around stadium seating, and hitting people with his jacket and talking about fairytails. The congregation have never read the bible!

I can't miss what I've never spent much time doing. I've attended church services only to appease certain church-going family members, and that very rarely (think midnight mass stuff). I find all the ritual and expense to put on the show rather vulgar. I am impressed with the beauty of the buildings but simultaneously sad over the underlying inspiration for them.
The only exception was prowling around the Exeter Cathedral in Devon while the choir was practicing for Evensong. I gave myself over to their extremely moving music, sat undisturbed at the base of one of the massive stone columns and just listened to the impeccable beauty of it with tears coursing down my cheeks. I only wish humans could be so inspired by the jaw-dropping natural world all around them without necessity of assigning credit for same to a god. I never realized until I did Habitat with my frat, but it is very christian based. Every morning before we started working the entire group would pray. And grace was done before lunch too. All in all though its still a good group, I wouldn't mind doing it again. But to answer the OP question, I've never really felt like I missed anything from a church but then again I never really went to church much as a kid. My parents are pretty lapsed Catholics. |
