It's not a question of 'dim,' Lad. It's a question of you being unable or unwilling to question the bullshit that has been poured into your ears since birth.

Try to understand that had you been born in Iraq you would be wrapping yourself in dynamite to kill those lousy jesus lovers who invaded your country. Religion is a factor of culture. Nothing more.

I believe I stated, quite clearly in another topic, that I have questioned my faith and been atheist at one time in my life. Had I been born in Iraq I would not be me, thus the claim is irrelevant. What I believe has not been poured into my ears at all; I came to the conclusions on my own, and therefore the thought and belief is my own. Nothing to do with church, which I rarely paid attention to as a child, btw. Wink

So you came to the conclusion that Jesus dies on the cross for the sins of all mankind all by yourself? Have you researched every other religion to make sure that their God claim wasn't more correct?

At this point in your life belonging is a top priority for psychological development. You need to assume an identity in order for your personality to develop fully. Religion does well in youth because it gives them an identity and a group in which they feel they can belong.

The Iraq analogy wasn't irrelevant, because the majority of people born in the Middle East are Muslim, and their views conflict with yours. God didn't put them there to challenge your faith, it was chance and through the laws of nature working that they even got a chance at life, and their religious views differ greatly from yours. This should put things into perspective, I hope.

Watson

If you'd been born on a desert island with no history of any of the Abrahamic churches, you would not be a christian.

To become a christian you must either be in doctrinated or have the indoctrinating material to hand.

You say you came to christianity by yourself so I'll say you were self indoctrinated.

But you could have chosen any one of a hundred equally invalid religions.

You obviously felt the need for something 'spiritual' and picked christianity because thats what people in your social circle do.

Do not kid yourself that if you lived in egypt, Iran, Afghanistan, Indonesia or any of the other deeply religious non-christian countries that you would be a christian because you just wouldnt.

You can fix ignorance, you can't fix stupid.

Laboured point DBP. You too in another situation would be something else. Don't kid yourself that your beliefs are your own.

I'm not saying it doesn't happen, intolerance does happen, everywhere and in every aspect of our lives. We're doing much better on the theist side then we were during the dark ages at least. :S

That's like a clan member saying they don't hang as many black folk these days, as they did back in the good ole' days....

Thank you Xtians for not putting me through a witch trial....Or of course beheading me for not believing the same...Tongue

You should be thanking modern law, not the Christians. Wink

ROFLOL Really, Frodo? I'm sorry, but if you thought about it for a minute, you would realize that it is ridiculous to say that modern law is based on Christian principles. Unless, of course, your scope of the world and law is limited to "Christian" nations.

tavarish- You seriously don't want to admit that their is such a thing as individuality, do you?

Your assumption and fallacious logic lies in the idea that I read the Bible and then, looked around and attributed everything to what was in the Bible. Not so. My beliefs were formed because, as I began to step away from atheism, I was encountering situations which I could not explain with any logical or scientific method at all. Keep in mind, at this point I still did not believe in a God of any sort.

I only just recently began reading the Bible, and have found that, whoa! It fits what's been going on in my life extremely well.

All the holy books ever written are an attempt by man at putting into words what is going on around him and explaining it in such a way that makes sense to him. However, living in different places, growing up in different conditions, even just plain being different people leads each holy book to have differences based on the particular author's mindset. Alas, some holy books are written with the express position of trying to dominate othr human beings, as is human nature to do so.

However, all of them are an attempt at describing the same phenomenon. I am sure that had I never been exposed to the Abhramic view of religion or any sort of holy book whatsoever, I would have still come to the conclusion that there was a God and I would have still believed He worked in the same way He is desccribed as working in each and every holy book. Yet, it's completely irrelevant, because despite everything, that's not what happened. At all.

Modern law based on Christian principles... you can't get away from the societal influence of the predominant religion just like I can't get away from the atrocities committed in it's name (and those aren't in the Bible Wink)
