My Roommate's Cat Just Killed a Bird
#11
RE: My Roommate's Cat Just Killed a Bird
Domestic cats are considered by some researchers to be the single biggest threat to the long term survival of many other small species. By some estimates domestic cats kill as many as 4 billion birds every year. While I like cats, I have come to the conclusion that they are an invasive species and a detriment to any natural environment in which they are introduced.

Keep your cats inside if you give shit about wild birds, small mammals and reptiles.
Save a life. Adopt a greyhound.

I keep my cat inside because I care about my cat, not the other silly animals out there.

And I used to keep mine inside for the same reason, but that was before I learned just how many other small animals domestic cats kill.

The days when I supported feral cat populations are over. As are the days when I objected to leash laws for cats similar to those many communities have for dogs.

What the fuck did I just do?!" Wild-eyed derangement, only to slip in through the back door and continue taunting the raccoons through the glass slider.

That's kind of funny, because my wife and I feed a group of strays that live nearby, a regular group of about four that always show up, and they've been joined by a mama raccoon who comes around and helps herself, too. The cats never bother the raccoon. She's just one of the gang.

Cats also kill mice.

Consider the birds "collateral damage."

Funny, I've always pictured you looking at the rest of us with exactly that look. :p

I do give a shit. But I also give a shit about my house... and my cat, like I said, will literally tear it to shreds if she can't go outside. I'm pretty sure she's feral. I got her from the Humane Society; someone had found her along with another live kitty on the side of the road with dead kittens and a dead momma. She started climbing the screens to go out the day I brought her home (when she was only about 2 LBs), and she still does it if she can't get outside when she wants (she's about eleven LBs now- six years old).

Because I give a shit, though, she is my last cat. She doesn't kill stuff, rather, the other cat does, but she's destructive in other ways. I'm not exactly a cat person, so once Bo is gone, I'm done.

Thanks for listening guys. It just made me so sad Sad

Birds shit on my car, the walk, and sometimes me. They also nest under my air conditioner making a terrible racket most of the time.

If a bird can't avoid a cat, tough luck.
