Is it ever right to use a racial slur to make a point?

I disagree, it's only a racial slur when used as such. Otherwise it's just a word. Fag and faggot are just words. In Britain using them can mean both cigarette and a food stuff that's served in gravy. On the other hand it can also be used as a derogatory term towards homosexuals. The N word also has other meanings beside the obvious. It is often used as a term of endearment funnily enough. It's used in film, TV, music. People might disagree with how it's used in such a way given the history of the word, but, like it or lump it, it's being used in such a way. That's just a fact you have to deal with. How you can say context doesn't matter, given these points, is a mystery to me.

Quote:Staying with that thought, do you think one black person calling another black person an Uncle Tom would be offensive and racist? Because that term has also been thrown around by the left and black office holders to describe conservative blacks like Alan West and Dr. Ben Carson. Is it ever right to use a racial slur in that instance?

Would you suggest outlawing the term Uncle Tom then? I never did get an answer on whether you would prevent people by law from saying the N word.

This is where you truly miss the point though. It's not about whether it's right or wrong to say it, it's about having the right to say it. Ofcourse I don't think it's right for people to use derogatory language in the context you suggest, but what you're doing is flat out ignoring that context even plays a part. You're saying that anyone who supports freedom of speech is a closet racist, essentially. Do you seriously believe that?

Probably not, but that doesn't mean it still isn't offensive to most blacks no matter who's using and it doesn't dismiss the term as an offensive racial slur, which is what you're trying to do.

Being Caucasian as I am, I can only argue from how I think I might feel if I was black. That being said, I would argue that the word nigger used in a discussion about racism and not in reference to any person would be less offensive than, "that doesn't mean it still isn't offensive to most blacks". It could just be me. I really hate when people say blacks instead of black people or whites instead of white people. I find that to be rude regardless of context.

I hear what you're saying - but I'll take it one farther. I'd like to see the day when the color of one's skin matters not at all *in any context*. In other words, it will be completely unnecessary to refer to someone as a white person or a black person, or any other color.

I agree, but it can be helpful in terms if describing a person to someone when you can't remember their name.

Lmfao, not exactly what I was thinking of Rhythm.
I meant more along the lines of someone you're both somewhat acquainted with and you've forgotten their name.

Never gonna happen. The best you can hope for is that skin colour is treated the same way as hair colour, or eye colour. We'll never get to a point where people's defining features will be ignored outright.

A Theist's problem is when the n-word is used to accurately reflect the viewpoints of people like himself. That, and the fact that he can't use it when they call each other niggas.
