So I just got back my IQ score and diagnosis and I'm sad
September 25, 2014 at 8:27 pm
My parents payed for a comprehensive evaluation of my IQ, mental diagnosis, ability to pay attention, and some irrelevant school stuff.
I'm upset because my IQ is 108. No one ever did anything great with an IQ of 108. It's average. I might as well just be working in construction or something (I hate construction). Hell, I'm probably not even smart enough to be a manager at a food industry (I hate food industry).
I was also diagnosed with an 80% chance of autism. They said my eye contact was bad, my interests are limited, and tend to lecture on specific subjects but I catch myself.
Then they told me that I have trouble paying attention which I don't care about. I just feel like I can pay attention to stuff just fine if it's interesting to me, but they had me take a test where they had me click a mouse every time a letter appeared on a screen and to avoid clicking on the letter X and the test went on for like 15 minutes. It was exhausting.
So basically I'm socially awkward, dumb, have difficulty paying attention. It just makes me sad.

Incorrect on the last line, especially.
IQ is only really relevant if you allow it to be. There are many people who have high IQs that I've encountered who are socially inept and/or, dumb as a barrel full of creationists.
Be who you are. Strive to be what you want. If your drive is strong enough you'll make it.

Don't be sad matey...
Mediocrity isn't so bad, otherwise why would so many people be in that part of the bell curve!
There's absolutely nothing wrong with NOT being exceptional at anything.
I'm not. I'm happy.
Remember, 90% of the world are silly enough to believe in imaginary gods!
You are already in the 10% of the clear thinkers.
Stay cool, go watch a movie, get a burger and make fun of someone less fortunate than you ... This is a specialised skill which we Aussies are very good at!
(Especially when we're beating England at cricket!)
PS, paid, not payed.

Actually, 100 is average, so 108 is above average. Also, you have to remember that 50% of people are below average. From the thread title I thought you were going to say it was 80 or something.

What does that even mean "your interests are limited"? How would they determine that? And even if they are, so what? Also, having poor eye contact could mean a lot of things, not just a sign of unintelligence. In fact, I've never even considered that lack of eye contact could mean that. Are you at all shy?

This.
I'll also note that performance on IQ tests can vary if you're impaired by depression, etc.

You shouldn't be sad about being average. It isn't bad, no matter what people say. It's nothing to celebrate about, but it's nothing to complain about either.

I hit the 150's (I hear that the tests and grading have changed since), I dig holes for a living -and that's about all I can manage-. Something tells me that IQ isn't a measure of fate.

Well, when I was a kid, I was tested, and, years later, I was told my IQ was 176.
Before you think I'm bragging, I would like to point out that Stanley Kubrick, one of the most brilliant filmmakers ever, and director of my favourite film of all time, apparently had an IQ below the average. And Joachim Von Ribbentrop, one of the high-ranking Nazis hated by all the other Nazis for his idiocy, was tested at the Nuremberg Trials and had a score of 129.
So, really, IQ tests aren't exactly what you'd call a reliable indicator of intelligence.
And, seriously, I've lived with an ASD for my entire life.
