Are you a "closet" Atheist?
|
Yes and no.
My friends generally know and are mostly themselves atheists. My fairly-religiously-involved parents know; my mom asked, and we discussed, and then I sought out my dad to tell him, because I don't want to keep things from one parent (and my mom wouldn't tell him, I know, out of respect for my privacy). My younger brother is agnosticish and I've discussed it with him a lot. My youngest brother is quite religious; I haven't brought it up with him, but if he asks I'll tell him, as I will most people. On the other hand, I will lie through my teeth to my grandparents. They're nearing 80, are super-religious, and it would break their hearts if they knew I was an atheist. Like, it would literally decrease their quality of life. If they ask point-blank if I believe in god - I don't think I will, because they couldn't even fathom not believing in god, but still - if they ask, I will lie to them. Because I love them. It's tough.

Don't worry, my friend. If this be the end, then so shall it be.
Am I a closest atheist? Well, I'm the atheist closest to me I guess. Probably always will be.

What options would you add?
I reject your reality and substitute my own!
I think many people I know would not know that I am an atheist but that does mean I am in the closet.
What it means is that in the UK what people believe is generally a private thing. You can fix ignorance, you can't fix stupid. Tinkety Tonk and down with the Nazis.
I voted "not afraid to be honest", although I don't usually go around broadcasting my atheism. I'm sure lots of my relatives and coworkers assume I'm Christian. All of my friends, close family, and some coworkers know, but that's about it.

I don't tell people I'm an atheist unless they ask me. Just like I don't tell people I'm an organ donor unless they ask me. Though...organ donor is listed on my Driver's License. I think organ donor is more important information to share than atheist. Maybe something different. Well...to be honest, I don't go around telling people what I don't believe about anything. If someone asks me I tell them, otherwise it seems silly to just be letting people know what you don't believe for no reason.
And on the same token, I do not run around telling people that I do not believe in ghosts, goblins, vampires, werewolves, etc..
However, if I am asked ...
You make people miserable and there's nothing they can do about it, just like god.
-- Homer Simpson God has no place within these walls, just as facts have no place within organized religion. -- Superintendent Chalmers Science is like a blabbermouth who ruins a movie by telling you how it ends. There are some things we don't want to know. Important things. -- Ned Flanders Once something's been approved by the government, it's no longer immoral. -- The Rev Lovejoy (December 22, 2014 at 5:56 pm)IATIA Wrote: And on the same token, I do not run around telling people that I do not believe in ghosts, goblins, vampires, werewolves, etc.. This. People who believe in werewolves, vampires, fairys, elvs, etc... don't go around trying to convert others and force their beliefs on us through religious laws. Atheism is exactly the same as aunicornism or aogreism. It's the noises made by rational people when confronted with irrational beliefs.

Just my fellow atheist best friend and a couple bible nuts who I've debated with at school. None of my relatives know though.
