Monotheism barely exists
July 7, 2015 at 6:13 pm
It has donned on me over a period of 6 months roughly that no religion is actually monotheistic in any sense although Sikhism could have a shot at the title along with Deism although it is not a religion.
The primary 3 "monotheisms" are Christianity, Islam and Judaism which are also all Abrahamic. These religions all posses angels and other supernatural beings along with others that are worshiped.
Christianity of course has the trinity along with angels and the Catholic fraction of it has the worship of saints.
Islam treats Muhammad as divine to such an extent his name is mentioned in Tashahhud during all prayers and he is given blessings even in death along with the ability to supplicate through him or other prophets in Islam(Sunniyah) while Shi'ite Islam is more blatant in this.
Now Judaism I am less familiar with but I will take a shot and say that some less orthodox branches of it have polytheistic tendencies, correct me if I am wrong.
I used to be a Muslim by the way and I loved touting the Tawhid (oneness) brand and wasn't able to reconcile it with the obvious shirk that is permissible in Islam contradicts the religion itself.

To pick rather a large nit, saints in Catholicism aren't worshipped. Nor are angels or Mary. Saints and Mary, particularly, are venerated. This isn't the same as worship, which is reserved for God as expressed in the Trinity (which isn't a polytheistic concept, either). To put it very basically, saints are never, ever prayed to, although it may appear as such to non-Catholics. God is prayed to, saints are asked to intercede with God on behalf of the penitent. The 'logic' behind this is that saints are especially favoured by God, and they might put in a good word (so to speak) with God for you. Arguably the most famous prayer in Catholicism - Ave Maria - isn't a prayer to Mary, but a prayer asking Mary to pray for sinners.
It makes a weird king of sense if you were raised Catholic and said rosaries til your tongue went numb.

Yes, it is funny how "monotheists" often like to make a big deal out of their monotheism, all while believing in numerous gods. An angel is very similar to an ancient Greek god in its power and abilities.

Yeah..that's a "nit" alright. The fuckers pray to Mary all the time as if she could do something for them. That's close enough to a 'god' in my book and you don't get to be a 'saint' unless some liar swears that you performed "miracles."
Fuck the catholics and their bullshit. At least the pagans were honest about it.

Either a saint is totally simpatico with God or he/she is down in Hell getting their rectum filled with incandescent porcupines, so what's a prayed to saint going to pass on to God that God hasn't already worked out for Himself ??

Some Christians make Satan sound as if he is far more powerful than their omnipotent god so I think he could be considered a deity also

Archaically speaking no difference was made with subordinate gods(angels) and evil gods(demons or Satan). So Satan is indeed as much of a god as anything else in the Bible. We of course just have better labels to describe such gods now.

I remember a few days ago I was poking around some Apologist website, and it said something like this:
"The basis of Christianity: the holy trinity."
So it's based on a contradiction. Not a good start. I feel like they make these religious stories deliberately contrived and impossible, to make the believer feel special for being able to "understand" it. If it was just, "That guy over there is in charge, free tea and coffee" people would get bored and wander off.
