People of either persuasion are as likely to use spurious logic.

Ryan's post is obscene. No doubt about that.

Well specifically:

Catholics call on guidance from saints to find lost things and other things. All Christians tend to pray, what is this is not superstition.

And in general:

All the claims theists make are in my view superstitious.

Religion at its heart, is formalize superstition.

Catholics.. Christians!?! (You seen the recent threads?). Atheist Catholics to a tee.

Praying superstitious? How so?

These seem to be errors of misunderstanding. Exactly my point about disbelief. You're more open to it.

Likewise atheist superstition

You continue to outdo yourself in sheer nonsensical stupidity. Your faith makes you utterly irrational.
Skepticism is not a position; it is an approach to claims.
Science is not a subject, but a method.

And if they hadn't made it, you'd be bitterly complaining about that, and wondering where the condemnations are.

Not really. I would've been like "business as usual."

A nation that breeds so many terrorist groups and high-profile terrorists has no business condemning terrorism, especially not when its political leaders are not-so-subtly endorsing numerous terrorist groups abroad.

I really hate this shit trying to treat Catholics as not being Christians. Their central God is the Christian god and their man/god is Jesus. Catholics are Christians, along with Mormons and Baptists and Pentecostals. Just because you don't like their version of book, and just because you don't like there sect of Christianity does not mean you do not have the same super heros you worship. Just like Sunnis and Shiites are both still Muslims.

Just like Ayn Rand was an atheist like me. I cant stand what she did to economics, but that does not change that she held no beliefs in a god. How you wish others would behave does not change that they share the same god you do. Just like I don't like what other atheists do, they are still atheists regardless.

And yes, praying is superstitious in any religion. Praying to a multiple armed elephant, or a fat guy, or a guy on a stick or a magic guy riding a carpet, at best all that does is calm you, but it doesn't summons invisible beings or old spirits to help you. It is nothing but talking to yourself.

Hey it's not my argument Bri but the consensus of the forum. And a joke.

Catholicism is a club you're joined to by virtue of the vagina you entered the world from. You're confirmed blah blah blah later... who knows how it works. Fact is... you can be an atheist and a Catholic. You'd have to formally request excommunication to get your name off the books. The religion is centred on Christ from the new testament and the extra book Catholics seem to add to the mix. Some Catholics are non trinitarian apparently. So Christian in the very loose sense.

Sure I do and do't take responsibility for the rest of humanity. What's different between me and them? 'Why make the distinction between theist and atheist. Show me the difference regarding the subject in hand : superstition. "Religion" has its skeletons, sure. Were the abominable acts of terror born from Christ like motives or human failing?

How is praying superstitious? It's no good saying "because it is" Bri. This is a discussion forum. You're supposed to contribute something beyond that.

Probably has something to do with making an appeal to a supernatural entity as though they existed and were capable of enacting change in your life or circumstances.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Yea, that's like saying not believing in unicorns is a superstition.

That's pretty uninformed actually. You join the club by being baptised and you leave it by making a formal declaration, not by asking for excommunication. And you can be an atheist and be anything, if you so wish or if you're willing to go through the motions of any given religion.

And what gives you the impression that some catholics are not trinitarian? As opposed to the thousands of protestant denominations, catholics have dogmas and doctrines to follow. So your post is utter nonsense.

Anyone of any religious label in the world can simply go through the motions that is what is called a "cultural(insert label here)." Those are people who like the traditions but dont literally believe in a god.

But for anyone of any label if you have a god or gods and you pray to them, or if you even are praying to an object like a statue thinking it actually does anything more than make you feel calm or good, and that there is some magic that will give you what you want, that is a superstition.

Just admit you have no evidence for your god. No one will kill you. No one will hate you for being honest with yourself. But don't make excuses for things you have no evidence for.

I don't claim to know much about Catholicism at all. Formal declaration/ excommunication... there's a difference??

"you can be an atheist and be anything, if you so wish or if you're willing to go through the motions of any given religion." - so are you saying you can be a Christian/ Muslim/ Catholic/ Jewish atheist then? that's what I was saying.

Our recent visitor said that he didn't believe (as an atheist and (he said) Catholic) that his Catholic church believed that Jesus was God. Just a messenger. I'll happily be corrected. I'll go investigate that.

Superstitious praying by the uninformed. Not anything I recognise as religious. I've seen it going on.

I've always admitted that I have no evidence. To you, many times. It was my first thread on this forum 5 years ago. That position hasn't changed. Pull your head out of your ass Bri. It smells of roses out here.
