I agree, don't judge a philosophy by its abuse.
And I don't think that if it's misunderstood it means the philosophy itself is bad at all, it usually just means it was badly articulated.
I agree with the philosopher Dan Dennett that when dealing with important subjects from a position of power or education or whatnot, you should think about not only what affect your words will have when explaining your philosophy, but also the effects common misunderstandings of your words will have.
