Here's the thing, priests are supposed to practice celibacy. Therefore if you choose to abstain from sex, why would sexual orientation matter? Why even come out?
It's most likely he wanted to leave the church, just couldn't do it without being a publicity queen.
I'm heterosexual. This is not because I have sex with women. it's because I'm attracted to women. Even a celibate man is heteroseual, or homosexual, and he felt like coming out for whatever reason he deemed appropriate. Maybe he felt he was a good guy with a good reputation, and letting people know he's gay also lets people know that gays can be good people too.
I'm pretty sure you don't need to be excommunicated just to leave the church. Even if that was the case, and he is legitimately gay, then being straight about it (lol) is at least honest. I doubt it's just because he wanted publicity. Not sure what positive outsome he'd get out of it.
