For me it helps to be a perfect mixture of our former monarchy. Part Hungarian, part Czech, part German, part Jewish. Nationalism never played a role in my upbringing, since my family spent their whole lives fighting it. Doesn't mean I don't love my country, but it does mean that I'm foremost European. And being proud of that, as far as anyone can be proud of the coincidence of birth.
