I think at least in the US, pilots are pilots usually because they want to be, because they genuinely like it. And hairdressers are what they are because of the same reason. Not because of "society", at least not anymore.
I don't think that's how it works. Most of the things we think and feel, we think and feel because of what we are raised (not only by parents, but communities, schools, and society) to think and feel. It doesn't make it less real.
I have a weird passion for doing housework. It was never what I intended to do as a career, but I enjoy doing it. I love having a germ free spic and span house and I like getting it done with music playing and a cute little 1950's smile on my face. Why? Because my entire life I was raised to believe not only was that what made me a woman, but it was what made me a good woman. Ability to not only keep a clean house, but to enjoy doing so was a big factor in my worth as a female. And that kind of stuff isn't something you can just logic away. It doesn't mean I only think I enjoy it. It just means the reasons for it ever being an option as something I might love to do are that everyone told me (by words and example) that without it I couldn't be a good woman. I know as an adult that that is stupid but I still love doing it anyways.
