Being an atheist represents a response to theistic claims. Those claims exist, and there are people who reject those claims, and they are atheists. Claims don't have to be about something real, clearly, or else every claim that something is real would automatically be true.
By this logic, I can't disbelieve in Santa Claus without acknowledging Santa Claus is actually real.
