There are a lot of reasons. For one thing, I notice that modern christianity hates on gay people more than adulterers even though Jesus supposedly reiterated that 'God hates divorce' yet did not mention homosexuality at all. Why is that?
It is because it is easier to reject 'otherness' to be rejected and strengthens identity.
Perhaps it came about because back in the day children were needed for war and more children meant more power, especially for a nation amongst other warring nations.
Religiously, some christians are against gay people because it is seen as a rejection of God's Will and will lead the country into destruction. These same people also believe that hurricanes, earthquakes, terrorist attacks, etc come as God's just punishment on evil people or people who tolerate evil.
At best some christians see gay people as having a mental disorder or demon possession needing therapy or exorcism. Or perhaps some enlightened christians may tolerate gay people as long as they stay in the closet.
