The North Carolina workman's compensation law covers the incident. His family will get screwed on the death benefit since he had only one day of work. They will get $3,500 for funeral expenses. From an employer perspective an employee should never start work until the employer can take out a life insurance policy on him. Those used to be tax deductible for the employer. If the kid didn't have his own life insurance policy his family will be on the short end of the stick.
