This reference is precisely why Trump has a commanding lead in the GOP primary race; the inability of yokels to understand exactly what's being said. Goodman's character had two main points about being in the position of 'fuck you'. All you seemed to hear was 'America' and 'fuck you' resulting in your euphoria. Back to his two points:
1. The first was setting up a position of 'fuck you' when one comes into $2.5M. What followed was prudent advice on how to live the rest of one's life not beholden to others. Nowhere was there a claim that the 'American Dream' was intact and the $2.5M was available to anybody or gained through perseverance.
2. He was also very specific regarding the birth of the U.S. regarding the position of 'fuck you'. This alone is what was exceptional about the U.S., imperfect as it was (the imperfection is proven by the need for the Civil War). You 'American Exceptionalism' warriors only offer potential as collateral for the loans you wish to secure.
Jefferson, Washington, Madison, Franklin and others would be ashamed of what their effort has become. Lincoln was a force of nature and a worthy successor. Brokaw's Greatest Generation are equally worthy of our adulation as exceptional; however, we've pretty much cocked things up since then. We're capable of so much more.
