Science has always existed I would say, in some primitive form, as long as life has been able to think. If no one ever used evidence based reasoning, they wouldn't be able to walk through a door. They'd randomly bang about and try to teleport and stuff, rather than follow the evidence of what has worked before.
Even animals use science-esque (my own silly phrase) tactics. Basically, it is pragmatism above all else. They do what works, or at least they try to, within the confines of their intelligence.
If science-esque techniques didn't exist... well... life wouldn't have got very far.
