The spirit of the 2nd Amendment seems to also call for a Well Regulated Militia which doesn't include total assholes with guns. I feel like a path toward firearm ownership needs to come with showing dedication by putting in range time, showing proficiency, and somewhere in the mix mental competence and real respect for the deadly force of these weapons.
This is partly why gun shows kind of make me cringe. I think they make the sale and possession of guns seem like a casual or trivial thing.
