It is a scientific theory, which means it has been promoted from being "just a hypothesis" through rigorous examination and testing. The best scientific minds in the world have tried everything they can to try and find problems with it, and they have failed. A theory is the grandest accolade it could have.
The informal use of the word "theory" really means "hypothesis", and this is where the confusion occurs, deliberately or otherwise. Sadly some scientific hypotheses have the word "theory" in them, which confuses things further, such as string theory. Such things aren't yet theories. But evolution most certainly is.
He doesn't understand evolution, he's grasping at straws and trying to apply "common sense" to one interpretation of one aspect of the whole process. He needs to learn more about it, or stop talking crap.
