He wasn't shouting "gay and proud" when he opened fire, finally purging that demon. Something -else- got out of that guy. I'm going to go ahead and trust that in this moment, in his life, he was being as honest as he'd ever been.
Had he been straight and not loathed himself (assuming he was gay and not casing the place like a supervillian...right?)....it doesn't seem likely that he would loathe gays any less. After all, being one himself didn't help.
