Unlikely, with regards to the latter. The last gasp of paganism was julian pan-hellenism. Knowledge, learning, a nascent sense of scientific inquiry, these were all positively valued.
Our common ideas of what pagans did or thought is handed down to us by christians, bofc.....not known for their honesty - particularly in describing groups they were actively persecuting. They were described as superstitious bumpkins...ironic, since that's how the pagans described the christians when they showed up.
