Is rape really going up though, or is it just that women feel more empowered to report it now?
It's an important question. In the past, rape would often go un-reported since the woman would not have a legal leg to stand on, would be shamed for it, or even see marital rape as "normal" and something she had to tolerate.
It's the 21st Century (in the Western world at least) though, rape is taken a lot more seriously now and is relatively de-stigmatised for the victims, so more women are coming forward.
That's why I'm skeptical when I see reports that rape is (apparently) SO much higher in Western countries than it is in socially-backwards developing countries. It's probably not, the figures probably work out about the same, but a woman in Sweden or Canada is far more likely to report it and be taken seriously than a woman in Pakistan.
