Strictly speaking, both are immoral positions to hold, IMO, but one more defensible than the other.
I disagree. Imposing your own conception of conscience upon others by banning their own expression of it is hardly a moral act, especially once you consider the bloodshed that would necessarily accompany such a measure.
Would you imprison believers? Explain that in terms of morality: not only stripping them of the freedom of conscience, but stripping them of physical freedom, when they've done nothing else criminal.
