Offering children as a human sacrifice is attested in the Bible as a "foreign" practice among Israelites. Such children were burnt. Evidence from Phoenician archaeology seems to confirm such a practice among the descendants of Canaanite culture. The Bible texts describe such human sacrifices as offered to - or possibly "as" - molek in other places as well. It's when people were converting to Judaism and a lot of the temples picked up those foreign, pagan and cultural influences to make transition easier (like the catholics did with Christmas).
