I can only shake my head at people not taking creatures like that at their word.
To be fair, most people don't really believe what politicians promise when they are seeking to be elected. I predicted that Trump would be a fascist and people accused me of being a scare-monger, but I am still suprised at the rate of which Trump is moving.
It actually makes sense from a demagogue's point of view to do all these controversial things at once. It's the whole bed of nails technique that Trump's been using so successfully. Any one controversial comment or act could sink a politician, but do them all at once and the media don't really have time to talk about it before it gets pushed out of everybody's consciousness by something new.
The problem is that we base our expectations on past experience. Politicians being two faced, insincere and careful to avoid any criticism from the media. But that doesn't mean to say that something really new can't happen. Fascism can take root when people think that it's not possible for it to ever make a come back.
All bets are off with Trump. We just don't know how this will play out.
