Well, can't speak for the US, never been there and all I got is the usual news about hurricanes tornados and what the POTUS is doing. One day Ill visit when I find gold in Portugal. You never know.
Around here, protests are usually escorted by the regular cops with the 3 foot batton hit&run squad as backup. In political matters rarely we have riots, just skirmishes, usually done either by anarchists and/or right wing extremists. They usually ruin a firm protest.
An example. There was a protest that cabbies did against uber and cabify here. Some elements later found to be not cabbies but just soccer hooligans, went in there and started attacking cars suspected of being uber cars. They ruined a perfectly legit protest IMO. Cabbies need a professional drivers license here and have to pay maintenance on the meters and subject their cars to strict safety inspections every year. Uber drivers do not. It is an example ofc.
In everything there must be some patience. Usually the radio tells the news and traffic, so when driving I avoid protests. It would take longer to go trought it without incident, than to just go around it.
