One of those little inconvenient truths that people try to sweep under the rug. That's why it's a really, really shitty idea to model oneself after a person instead of coming up with a decent moral system on one's own. And why no one who claims to do this deserves one tiny iota of respect for it.
I don't want to defend the Biblical Jesus. But I would say if most Christians were actually trying to be a lot more like he was, we'd all be better off. Bombing countries full of brown people or beating up homosexual men is infinitely less better a solution to issues of contention than turning the other cheek and refusing to cast the first stone.
And I'm trying to get you to understand, putting the man on a pedestal is a fucking mistake. Take the good ideas, discard the shitty ones, give the hypocritical a-hole the middle finger for pretending to be more than he was and tricking people, and pat yourself on the back for being smart enough to figure out to do that instead. And don't backpedal and say you're not defending the bastard if you're still saying people should emulate him. That's the whole problem in the first place! Not only is the bible a load of shit in the first place, but people have managed to cobble together a completely fabricated version of it in their minds from something already painfully obviously fictional. That's such a disconnect from reality, that's like...16 walls. How is it healthy to lie to oneself about the nature of one's (misplaced) idol? Not to mention idolizing a person is a horrendous idea in the first place (never meet your heroes, right?). If he was completely perfect in every way that would still be a terrible idea because you'd be imposing unrealistic expectations upon yourself. Even Mary Poppins ain't nothin' to idolize.
People give themselves too little credit and damage their own self-esteem by tying it up in this nonsensical methodology. Only by emancipating themselves from this backward way of thinking can they evolve and reach their full potential. And let's not even forget that even the 'good' teachings of Jeebus are hopelessly naive in most cases (turn the other cheek? I tried that and got knifed!) so you can't even call him an intelligent person much less perfectly ethically upstanding. I'm not going to say it myself, but leave it to someone I respect more than the bastard son of a bastard god:

Religions were invented to impress and dupe illiterate, superstitious stone-age peasants. So in this modern, enlightened age of information, what's your excuse? Or are you saying with all your advantages, you were still tricked as easily as those early humans?
