The woman was caught worshiping another God other than Yahweh, the God of the Hebrews and the God of the armies. That's considered to be adultery in the Bible. The God she was probably worshiping was Yeshua himself, who claimed to have been the son of Yahweh, which would have made him a God.

This incident happened after Yeshua had lost most of his followers because of his talk about the necessity of them becoming cannibals. So he needed all of the followers he could get.
