There are so many self-described American conservatives (most of them, I would guess) who haven't the slightest inkling that conservatism -- whatever one thinks of it -- has a long and not entirely ignoble intellectual pedigree. Buckley, though I sort of miss him as the last of a breed, was a lightweight in comparison with much of what came before him. Today they listen to buffoons like Limbaugh and Hannity and think Ayn Rand is profound literature. Once upon a time, they read the works of the people Russell Kirk wrote about in The Conservative Mind.
